Ep 158 - Supporting Your Employees When Theres a Cancer Diagnosis - Workology

Ep 158 - Supporting Your Employees When Theres a Cancer Diagnosis - Workology Episode 158: Supporting Your Employees When Theres a Cancer Diagnosis with Ann Fry (@AnnFry) According to research by the National Cancer Institute, nearly 40% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point during their lifetimes. And this number is growing which makes the subject of cancer in the workplace a more common one. I’m not just talking about benefit plan negotiations but the support, resources, and information can provide your employees in the event that a coworking, themselves or a family member is impacted by a cancer diagnosis. Episode 158: Supporting Your Employees When Theres a Cancer Diagnosis with Ann Fry (@AnnFry) Today, I’m joined by Ann Fry. Ann is an executive leadership coach and workplace crisis consultant. I’m also delighted to call her my friend. Ann is a clinically trained social worker who uses her experience to provide leadership coaching as well as in her workplace crisis consulting. Ann first discovered the need for helping support leaders, their employees, and families in this way after receiving her own cancer diagnosis. She quickly realized that business leaders and workplaces arent equipped with the training and support beyond wellness programs and employee assistance programs to support the individual employee. Providing Employee Support for Cancer and Severe Medical Diagnosis This podcast topic is a somber one, however, having experienced this in my HR career first hand, I recognize a need for more of these conversations exist especially when you consider the growing number of people who are impacted by not just a cancer diagnosis but any severe illness. Ann says that the reality is when most people when receiving a diagnosis for themselves or a loved one they come in and talk to their boss. Often bosses and leaders are uncomfortable with the conversation and dont know what to say. She says that the leaders push those conversations off to HR. Part of what Ann likes to do is get involved in helping leadership be more comfortable being more sensitive so that when someone who works for them comes to them they can have conversations. The focus is on providing support for the employee and making them feel comfortable in a way that is unique to their specific needs. When it comes to a cancer diagnosis, employees need someone whos empathetic can genuinely have an understanding compassionate conversation. - @annfry #podcast #leadership Click To Tweet I think that may HR leaders may be concerned about things like HIPAA when it comes to the sharing of medical information. However, when an employee chooses to disclose a diagnosis Ann says that HR and leadership should talk to the employee and discuss on how and if they want it to be shared as well as the way in which they want to be supported by peers, leadership and their direct manager. This information is longer a HIPAA issue, however, managers should work with the employee to discuss how, when, and with you to share the diagnosis. Sometimes this comes in the form of a flexible schedule, staying positive, checking in, or hosting a meal train for the family. Each situation is different just like the persons fight against cancer and journey. This topic is extremely important as Ann mentioned. It’s not just about wellness but about supporting our employees throughout their career with us. The truth is that our personal lives bleed over into our workplace ones and that is especially true when it comes to a serious illness or diagnosis like cancer not just for ourselves but our family and friends. I’ll never forget the feeling I had as an HR professional talking through my employee and his wife about the options for his life insurance and how he could file a claim once it was determined his cancer was terminal. I carry that memory and the call when he passed. We need to be thinking about the different ways we can provide our employees support in all areas of their lives. Connect with Ann Fry. Are You Focused in Your Job Search - Hire Imaging

Are You Focused in Your Job Search - Hire Imaging Individuals regularly ask me what I think to be the most significant bit of the pursuit of employment. They are very astonished when your resume isn't what comes out of my mouth. My recommendation to anybody needing to land quicker and more brilliant in work they love is: The more you center around what you need, the quicker you'll be employed. You may share the feelings I get notification from numerous customers when we start our work together: I am available to all choices. I need to leave the entryways open. You may be available to all prospects, yet you should have the option to mention to individuals what you need in exact language they comprehend. Pete and Greg: A Story of Focus We should take a gander at Pete and Greg. Both are in deals, and both have as of late lost their positions in the food and drink industry. They go to the equivalent, huge systems administration occasion, facilitated by their graduated class affiliation. When Pete meets individuals, he says: Hi. My name is Pete. I'm as of now jobless, and searching for deals work. I'll work anyplace in the Metro territory. Would you be able to support me? When Greg meets individuals, he says: Howdy. My name is Greg Jones. What are you doing here today? [Then he allows that individual to person, and he truly tunes in. At that point he goes on]: I'm searching for a District Manager position in the food and drink industry. As District Manager for Whole Foods Market, I drove region groups to create reliable high-dollar deals, regardless of a drowsy economy. I was likewise contracted to help a huge alcohol wholesaler pivot one of its low-performing divisions. We cut turnover 52% and recovered about a million dollars in costs. I'm searching for systems administration contacts like food and refreshment wholesalers who offer to retailers. Gracious, and I am authorized to perform wedding functions, and furthermore love occasion arranging. Along these lines, on the off chance that you realize anybody arranging a wedding with a strict financial plan, I can help! How might I help you today? Both Pete and Greg need a similar sort of occupations. Who do you figure individuals will be bound to help? Truly, Greg. He's certain and clear about his objectives. He is explicit in referencing the sort of work he's done and searching for; the kind of system contacts he wants to associate with. What's more, recollect that I referenced Greg listened first to the next individual talk. His how might I help you today is trailed by, I do know Sean at ABC Software. I'd be glad to present you two. Truly, he is available to any business work. In any case, that is not his need. What he's expressed is. Also, he's been laid off as well, however he doesn't make reference to being jobless. That is an excess of data now. The notice of performing wedding services and arranging occasions is simply, well, fascinating. Individuals are able to recall him as a result of it. And afterward, his final words are How might I help you today? This is consistently the most ideal approach to end the discussion. Offering to help another person leaves an amazingly constructive impression! What we can gain from Greg about core interest. I recognized before that you might be available to conceivable outcomes. In all actuality Greg will work anyplace at the present time, since he has a kid with exceptional requirements, a home loan, and a pregnant spouse not gaining salary right now. He needs to take care of his tabs. However, he gives people a constrained view (clear and succinct) of what he needs, since it will assist him with systems administration and he additionally realizes he would appreciate working in the FB business as a District Manager. Why is articulating an unmistakable picture to individuals justified, despite all the trouble? You will draw nearer to your ultimate objective, since you tell individuals succinctly what it is. Individuals who need to assist you with willing have the option to do as such. Your fantasy job won't become mixed up in a pursuit of employment that has a whatever subject directing it. In case you're available to potential outcomes, bravo! In any case, the best quest for new employment is one where you tight and talk about your top needs. Consider it identified with different parts of your life. Would you select at a college and state, I'll take whatever significant you have for me. I'm open. Would you go to your real estate agent and state, I'm available to any house in my spending planâ€"any format, neighborhood, any size. Would you go to your trip specialist and state, Here's my charge card. Send me off on an undertaking. I couldn't care less where. You merit this core interest. Individuals may appreciate your transparency and energy, yet they won't realize how to support you!! Also, here's the best part. On the off chance that you really name what it is that you need, as explicitly as could be expected under the circumstances, you will discover it opens up potential outcomes! In any case, it opens from a position of knowing, into here's more; as opposed to from, Goodness, anything … yet not certain what that is. For some, center doesn't come mysteriously. You may need to set aside some effort to conceptualize and investigate. Be that as it may, it will be extraordinary compared to other time speculations you've at any point made.
